If you have ever been told to “engage your core,” “brace your abs,” or “tighten your stomach,” you may have wondered what you are actually supposed to do.
Should you suck your stomach in?
Hold your breath?
Flatten your lower back?
Flex your abs as hard as possible?
The answer is: usually none of those.
Learning how to tighten core muscles properly is less about squeezing your stomach as hard as you can and more about creating coordinated tension through the muscles around your trunk while still being able to breathe and move.
This is important because your core plays a role in much more than abdominal exercises. Your trunk muscles help transfer force between your upper and lower body, control movement through your spine and pelvis, and provide stability when you walk, run, lift, reach, exercise, or play sports.

The goal isn’t simply to make your abs stronger. It is to teach your body how to produce the right amount of stability for the task you are performing.
What Does Your “Core” Actually Include?
When many people hear the word core, they immediately think about their six-pack muscles.
But your core is much more than your rectus abdominis.
The trunk is supported by a coordinated system of muscles around the abdomen, spine, pelvis, and hips. This includes muscles such as the transverse abdominis, internal and external obliques, rectus abdominis, multifidus and other spinal muscles, as well as contributions from the diaphragm, pelvic floor, gluteal muscles, and surrounding hip musculature.
Research describes core stability as the coordinated contribution of multiple muscle groups rather than the action of one isolated abdominal muscle. (PubMed)
That is an important distinction.
Your body doesn’t normally stabilize itself by turning on one muscle while everything else relaxes. It adjusts muscle activity according to what you are doing.
Picking up a coffee cup requires very little trunk stiffness.
Picking up a heavy barbell from the floor requires considerably more.
Your nervous system should be able to scale your core activation accordingly.
What Does It Mean to Tighten Your Core?
A useful way to think about tightening your core is to imagine preparing your midsection for someone to gently bump into you.
You aren’t trying to suck your stomach toward your spine.
Instead, you create a gentle firmness around your abdomen.
Your abdominal wall should feel slightly more solid while your ribs, pelvis, and spine remain relatively comfortable.
Most importantly, you should still be able to breathe.
This technique is often referred to as abdominal bracing.
Research comparing abdominal bracing with abdominal hollowing has found that bracing tends to produce broader co-contraction of the trunk muscles and can increase intra-abdominal pressure and trunk stability. Hollowing, on the other hand, is often used when the goal is more selective recruitment of deeper abdominal muscles such as the transverse abdominis. (PubMed)
Neither technique needs to be treated as the one correct way to use your core.
The technique should match the goal.
How to Tighten Core Muscles Step by Step
If you’re learning how to tighten core muscles, start in an easy position before trying to brace during squats, deadlifts, running, or other complex movements.
- Find a comfortable starting position. Lie on your back with your knees bent or sit or stand comfortably. You do not need to force your lower back completely flat or exaggerate an arch.
- Take a relaxed breath. Allow your rib cage and abdomen to expand naturally. Think about breathing into the front, sides, and back of your torso rather than only lifting your chest.
- Gently tighten your abdomen. Imagine someone is about to give you a light poke in the stomach. Firm the muscles around your midsection without aggressively pulling your belly button inward.
- Keep breathing. Take another breath while maintaining the tension. If you immediately have to hold your breath, you are probably bracing harder than necessary for a basic exercise.
- Maintain your position. Your rib cage should not dramatically flare upward and your pelvis should not need to tuck aggressively underneath you. Think about keeping your trunk controlled rather than rigid.
- Match the tension to the task. A dead bug may require a relatively gentle brace. A heavy lift, sprint, jump, or sudden change of direction may require considerably more trunk stiffness.
That ability to adjust the amount of tension is one of the most important parts of good core control.
Should You Suck Your Stomach In?
This is probably the most common misunderstanding when people are learning how to tighten core muscles.
Sucking your stomach inward is usually closer to an abdominal hollowing manoeuvre.
Hollowing can have a place in rehabilitation. It may be used to help someone become more aware of deeper abdominal muscles or practise specific motor-control strategies.
But it is not necessarily how you need to stabilize your body during every activity.
Abdominal bracing generally involves activating several muscles around the trunk simultaneously rather than trying to isolate one deep abdominal muscle. Research shows that bracing can produce greater trunk muscle activity and greater intra-abdominal pressure than hollowing. (PubMed)
A practical cue is:
Don’t suck your stomach in. Make your midsection gently firm.
Should You Hold Your Breath When Tightening Your Core?
For most rehabilitation exercises and everyday movements, you should be able to maintain core tension while continuing to breathe.
Breathing and trunk stability are closely connected because the diaphragm contributes to both respiration and trunk control. (PubMed)
This does not mean breathing mechanics need to become complicated.
Start by breathing normally while maintaining a gentle abdominal brace.
During heavy resistance training, athletes and experienced lifters may intentionally use different breathing and bracing strategies to create greater trunk stiffness. That is a different situation from teaching basic core activation to someone performing rehabilitation exercises or daily activities.
If you’re learning how to tighten core muscles, being able to breathe while maintaining control is usually a good starting point.
Your Core Shouldn’t Be Tight All Day
This one surprises people.
A strong core does not mean keeping your abdominal muscles contracted from the moment you wake up until you go to bed.
Your muscles are designed to contract and relax.
The amount of trunk stiffness you need changes depending on what you are doing.
Biomechanical research has shown that abdominal co-contraction can increase trunk stability, but greater co-contraction can also increase forces through the spine. (PubMed)
That doesn’t make bracing dangerous. It simply means more tension is not automatically better.
Your core should be adaptable.
You want enough stability to control the task without creating unnecessary stiffness everywhere else.
For example, you probably don’t need the same level of bracing while walking through your kitchen that you might use during a heavy squat.
What Does Proper Core Activation Feel Like?
When you correctly engage your core, you may notice your abdominal wall becoming slightly firmer underneath your fingers.
The tension should feel relatively broad rather than occurring only in one tiny area.
You might feel activity around the front and sides of your abdomen, with the rest of your trunk contributing depending on the movement.
You should generally still be able to breathe and speak.
And you shouldn’t need to dramatically change your posture just to feel your abdominal muscles working.
If your neck, jaw, shoulders, or hip flexors are working harder than your abdomen during a very basic core exercise, the exercise may need to be modified.
Common Mistakes When Trying to Tighten Your Core
One of the biggest mistakes is trying too hard.
People sometimes hear “brace your core” and immediately contract every muscle at maximum effort. That may make sense for certain high-load situations, but it is unnecessary for most rehabilitation exercises.
Other common mistakes include sucking the stomach inward aggressively, holding the breath throughout the exercise, pushing the abdomen outward forcefully, flattening the lower back as hard as possible, clenching the glutes unnecessarily, lifting the rib cage excessively, or trying to maintain maximum abdominal tension throughout the entire day.
The goal is not maximum stiffness.
The goal is appropriate control.
How to Practise Core Activation
Once you understand how to tighten core muscles in a simple position, the next step is to maintain that control while your arms and legs move.
A good starting exercise is the dead bug. Lie on your back, gently brace your abdomen, and slowly move one leg or the opposite arm and leg while preventing excessive movement through your trunk.
Another option is the bird dog. From your hands and knees, create gentle trunk tension and gradually extend an opposite arm and leg without allowing your lower back or pelvis to rotate excessively.
A side plank increases the challenge by asking the trunk to resist lateral bending.
Exercises such as Pallof presses teach the trunk to resist rotation, while loaded carries teach you to maintain trunk control while walking under load.
Eventually, core training should progress beyond floor exercises.
Squatting, lifting, pushing, pulling, running, jumping, changing direction, throwing, carrying groceries, and playing sports all require some degree of trunk control.
The goal of rehabilitation is usually to transfer the control you develop during exercises into the activities you actually care about.
Do Core Exercises Help Low Back Pain?
Core exercises can be helpful for some people with low back pain, but there is an important piece of context that is sometimes left out.
They aren’t magic.
Research supports exercise and motor-control training as potential components of treatment for persistent nonspecific low back pain. A 2023 systematic review found moderate-quality evidence that motor-control exercise can improve pain and disability, although the researchers cautioned that the magnitude of improvement should be interpreted carefully. (PubMed)
However, a Cochrane review found that motor-control exercises were not consistently clinically superior to other forms of exercise for people with acute or chronic nonspecific low back pain. (PubMed)
That is actually useful information.
It means there probably isn’t one magical “core exercise” everyone with back pain needs to perform.
The World Health Organization recommends structured exercise as one component of care for chronic primary low back pain, alongside education and other individualized treatments when appropriate. (World Health Organization)
So if someone tells you that your back pain exists simply because your core is “weak” or that one specific abdominal muscle needs to be activated perfectly before your back can recover, that explanation is probably too simplistic.
Pain is more complicated than that.
A good rehabilitation program should consider your symptoms, strength, mobility, activity level, training demands, work demands, confidence with movement, goals, and overall physical capacity.
Core Strength vs. Core Control
Another helpful distinction is the difference between strength and control.
Someone can have very strong abdominal muscles but poor control during a particular movement.
Conversely, someone may know exactly how to brace but lack the strength or endurance required to maintain that control during demanding activities.
Good rehabilitation usually develops both.
Early exercises may focus on awareness and coordination.
Then resistance, speed, range of motion, duration, and movement complexity can gradually increase.
Eventually, your core should work automatically rather than requiring you to constantly think about tightening your stomach.
When Should You Tighten Your Core?
Core activation is particularly useful when your body needs to transfer or resist force.
That might include lifting something heavy, carrying an object, performing a squat or deadlift, pushing or pulling, changing direction during sport, throwing, jumping, landing, or performing exercises where your arms or legs are creating significant forces around your trunk.
But the amount of tension should match the activity.
This is one reason we prefer the phrase core control rather than simply telling everyone to “keep your core tight.”
Your body should be able to become stiff when stiffness is useful and relax when it isn’t.
What If You Can’t Feel Your Core Working?
Not everyone immediately understands how to tighten their core.
And that is okay.
Sometimes changing the position, exercise, breathing pattern, or cue makes a big difference.
A physiotherapist or athletic therapist can also assess how you move and determine whether your difficulty is actually related to motor control, strength, pain, mobility, confidence, or something else entirely.
You also do not necessarily need to “feel the burn” in your abs for an exercise to be effective.
Your core muscles often work to prevent unwanted movement rather than producing a large visible movement themselves.
How to Tighten Core Muscles: The Takeaway
If you’re wondering how to tighten core muscles properly, remember that core activation does not need to be complicated.
Think about creating gentle firmness around your abdomen rather than sucking your stomach inward.
Keep breathing.
Maintain a comfortable trunk position.
Use enough tension for the activity you’re performing — but don’t assume more tension is always better.
And then practise maintaining that control while you move.
The ultimate goal isn’t to spend your day consciously squeezing your abs.
It’s to build a trunk that can automatically create the right amount of stability at the right time.
