Acupuncture in Hamilton
At Restorative Touch Physiotherapy, acupuncture may be used as part of an individualized treatment plan to help manage pain, improve comfort, and support your overall rehabilitation.
Our Hamilton Mountain clinic takes an evidence-informed approach to care. Rather than viewing acupuncture as a stand-alone solution, it may be combined with physiotherapy, exercise rehabilitation, manual therapy, education, and other treatment techniques depending on your condition, goals, and response to treatment.
If pain or stiffness is making it harder to work, exercise, play sports, sleep comfortably, or complete your normal daily activities, acupuncture may be one treatment option worth discussing with your healthcare provider.
What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a treatment technique that involves inserting very thin, sterile needles into specific areas of the body.
The practice originated thousands of years ago as part of traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional acupuncture describes treatment in terms of restoring balance and the flow of energy, sometimes referred to as “Qi.”
Modern healthcare practitioners may also use acupuncture from a neurophysiological and pain-management perspective. Needle stimulation interacts with sensory nerves and the nervous system and may influence the way pain signals are processed.
Today, acupuncture is used throughout the world and is commonly incorporated into treatment plans for musculoskeletal pain and other persistent pain conditions.
What Can Acupuncture Help With?
People commonly seek acupuncture for musculoskeletal pain, headaches, stiffness, and persistent symptoms that may not have fully responded to other approaches.
Depending on your assessment and individual circumstances, acupuncture may be considered for:
- Low back pain
- Neck pain
- Shoulder pain
- Knee osteoarthritis
- Muscle and joint pain
- Persistent or chronic pain
- Tension-type headaches
- Migraines
- Sports-related pain and injuries
- Repetitive strain injuries
- General musculoskeletal discomfort
Acupuncture is not appropriate for every condition or every patient. Your treatment should always be based on a proper clinical assessment rather than simply treating the location where you feel pain.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
There is no single accepted explanation for all of acupuncture’s effects.
Current research suggests that stimulation from acupuncture needles can interact with the nervous system and may influence mechanisms involved in pain processing.
This can include changes in sensory input from the treated area and activity within parts of the nervous system involved in the perception and modulation of pain.
For this reason, acupuncture is frequently used as one component of a broader pain-management or rehabilitation strategy rather than as a replacement for movement, exercise, or addressing the underlying factors contributing to an injury.
What Happens During an Acupuncture Treatment?
Before acupuncture is performed, your clinician will review your symptoms, medical history, treatment goals, and any relevant precautions.
Your clinician will determine whether acupuncture is appropriate for you and explain how it fits into your overall treatment plan.
During treatment, very thin acupuncture needles are inserted into selected areas of the body. The number and location of needles can vary depending on your symptoms and treatment approach.
The needles may remain in place for a period of time while you relax. In some cases, needles can be gently manipulated or combined with electrical stimulation.
Your treatment will be adapted based on your comfort and response.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Most people tolerate acupuncture well.
You may feel a brief pinch when a needle is inserted, but acupuncture needles are extremely thin. Some people notice a mild aching, pressure, warmth, tingling, or heaviness around a needle.
These sensations are generally temporary.
If anything feels uncomfortable during your treatment, tell your clinician so the treatment can be adjusted.
Is Acupuncture Safe?
Acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed appropriately by a qualified healthcare professional using sterile, single-use needles.
As with any treatment, side effects can occur. Temporary soreness, minor bruising, or a small amount of bleeding at a needle site are possible.
Before treatment, let your clinician know about relevant medical conditions, medications, pregnancy, previous reactions to needles, or anything else that may affect your treatment.
When acupuncture is performed by a physiotherapist in Ontario, the physiotherapist must have the appropriate training and meet the regulatory requirements for performing acupuncture.
Acupuncture vs. Dry Needling: What’s the Difference?
Acupuncture and dry needling both involve the insertion of thin needles into the body, but the treatment approaches are not necessarily identical.
Acupuncture has historical roots in traditional Chinese medicine and can involve predetermined acupuncture points as well as contemporary approaches to pain management.
Dry needling is generally based on a musculoskeletal assessment and commonly targets muscles or other tissues associated with a patient’s symptoms.
Depending on the clinician’s training and treatment philosophy, there can be overlap between the techniques.
Your clinician can explain which approach they recommend and why it may be appropriate for your condition.
How Many Acupuncture Treatments Will I Need?
There is no universal number of treatments that works for everyone.
The appropriate treatment frequency depends on factors such as the condition being treated, how long you have experienced symptoms, symptom severity, your overall health, your goals, and how you respond to treatment.
Your progress should be reassessed regularly. If acupuncture is not helping you move toward your goals, your treatment plan can be adjusted.
At Restorative Touch Physiotherapy, we believe treatment should always have a purpose. We don’t believe in continuing a treatment simply because it was part of the original plan.
Can Acupuncture Be Combined With Exercise?
Absolutely.
In many rehabilitation situations, acupuncture is most useful when it supports an active treatment program rather than replacing one.
For example, reducing pain or discomfort may make it easier for you to participate in strengthening, mobility exercises, therapeutic exercise, or a gradual return to sport and activity.
Our clinicians can help determine the combination of treatments that makes the most sense for you.
Is Acupuncture Covered by Insurance?
Coverage depends on your extended health insurance policy and the healthcare professional providing the treatment.
If acupuncture is being provided as part of physiotherapy treatment, coverage may depend on your physiotherapy benefits and the specific requirements of your insurance provider.
We recommend reviewing your individual benefits or contacting your insurer if you are unsure about your coverage.
